The most shocking conclusion in OKCupid's report is that the much-maligned 'MySpace angle'—a self-photo taken at an unrealistic and overly-flattering angle—is wildly successful for female users. Women who use these photos in their profiles receive an average of more than 15 new contacts on a monthly basis. The overall average was between 8 and 9 new contacts for 'normal' photos, and a photo of a woman doing an interesting activity falls below average at just 8 new contacts per month. OKCupid's operators were themselves shocked at this and even tried to exclude all 'MySpace angle' shots that included cleavage, but there was no change in the result. According to OKCupid, the average chance that any message will lead to a back-and-forth discussion is at about 27 percent, but a photo of a person doing something interesting (say, playing an instrument, playing a sport, crafting something, etc.) is much higher at a hair over 40 percent. Second to that is posing with an animal (hey, people like animals, okay?) at about 37 percent, while a travel photo sits at just over 30 percent. The categories that are below average for conversations are cleavage shots, MySpace angles, having fun with friends, and most dooming of all, photos of the subject drinking.

'If you want worthwhile messages in your inbox, the value of being conversation-worthy, as opposed to merely sexy, cannot be overstated,' says OKCupid. We agree.

What does it all mean!?

There are times that a picture truly is worth a thousand words, and the old maxim that you never get a second chance to make a first impression rings true here, as the image you choose makes a significant difference in whether you'll get messages or not. But the trends show what most of us geeks really don't like to admit (and some of us still downright refuse to believe): even in online dating, where you supposedly have the opportunity to present yourself as an intelligent individual with impeccable taste and wit, the cold, hard data shows that the masses still react to the same primal cues that work in real life: boobs, abs, and a pretty face.
